From June 3 - 9, employees are encouraged to leave their car at home as part of the Commuter Challenge. The Commuter Challenge is a week-long, national challenge between work places to motivate employees to think about their usual commute to work. It’s a great way to try something other than driving alone.
Last year, over 100 employees at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre participated in the Commuter Challenge. A number of champions actively commuted as part of the Challenge. Jasmine Farmer, who works in Prevention and Screening Services at the Hospital, is one of them.
Farmer started actively commuting to work last April after volunteering for the 20 minute Green & Clean through our Hospital. She wondered what else she could do for the environment. Farmer decided to stop driving alone and switched to an active commute. Coworkers joined in and it became a social part of their day, making the ride home that much better. “It’s a great stress reliever after a busy day at work,” Farmer says.
There are many options when it comes to commuting in Thunder Bay. Try cycling, walking, inline skating, skateboarding, running, or other activities. Actively commuting can increase cardiovascular fitness and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The fresh air is an excellent way to clear your mind before you start or end a long work day. City transit is an environmentally-friendly commuting option.
Let Farmer or someone in your workplace inspire you. Sign up yourself or your workplace to try at least one other way of commuting to work from June 3-9. Take the Commuter Challenge and reduce the amount of cars on the road, save some gas money, and get active!
