On Wednesday, April 19, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, paid a visit to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and its research arm the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute. "We have formed a successful research hub outside of a major metropolitan area, focused on innovative ways to collaborate and build capacity, and – most importantly – remain patient-centric. It was an honour to share this with Minister Duncan," said Jean Bartkowiak, President & CEO of the Hospital and CEO of the Health Research Institute.
During her tour of the Cyclotron facility, Minister Duncan learned about the production of isotopes that will be used to “light up” cancer cells during positron emission tomography (PET) imaging for cancer diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment monitoring. Having a steady supply across the parking lot rather than across the province will reduce delays to patient care.
Minister Duncan also had the opportunity to tour the Health Research Institute lab and meet scientists and students working there. The Health Research Institute provides opportunity for many students to remain in Northwestern Ontario to pursue careers in medical research, working alongside talented scientists conducting medical imaging research and discovery that improves the health of the people of Northwestern Ontario.
