Share a Heart Floral Fundraiser: Spreading Love and Supporting Cardiac Care
Bryan MacKay, founder of the Share a Heart Floral Fundraiser, started the initiative to honour his father and support local cardiac care.
This Valentine's Day, the Share a Heart Floral Fundraiser celebrates its sixth year of spreading love and supporting the Our Hearts at Home Campaign. Since its inception on February 14, 2019, this initiative has sold over 400 bouquets, raising vital funds for local cardiac care.
The fundraiser's creator, Bryan MacKay, shared the inspiration behind it: “My father passed away from a heart attack at age 63. Helping to support and promote cardiac care has always been close to my heart. Valentine's Day is symbolized by the heart, and flowers are one of the most popular gifts to give. The idea of giving flowers while supporting heart health grew from that connection.”
After approaching local florists with the concept, the fundraiser quickly blossomed into a community tradition. While many supported the idea in its early years, three florists - Grower Direct (777 Red River Road), Rollason Flowers (128 Frederica St E), and Vaillant Florist (178 Algoma St N) have continued to participate year after year.
Available throughout February, these $40 arrangements not only make a thoughtful gift but also help support the Our Hearts at Home Campaign, with a portion of the proceeds directly benefiting local cardiac care.
Fun Fact: Valentine's Day has yet to fall on a Saturday since the fundraiser began, a milestone to look forward to in 2026.
The Share a Heart Floral Fundraiser isn't just about giving beautiful flowers; it's about showing care for loved ones and the health of our community. As Bryan puts it, “The concept of offering a ‘Share a Heart' bouquet with someone shows you care about them as well as improving cardiovascular care in our community.”
