Eight-year-old Saige McKay has turned her birthdays into an opportunity to give back. Instead of asking for presents, she has spent the past three years raising money for the Northern Cancer Fund, which helps support cancer care at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and the region.
Saige's inspiration comes from her mom, Olivia Pelletier, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in early 2022. Watching her mom go through treatments, Saige wanted to do something meaningful to help. Rather than feeling helpless, she found a way to make a difference, using her birthday to bring hope to others facing similar challenges.
"The Cancer Centre helps take care of my mom all the time," Saige said. "That's why we wanted to donate to the Northern Cancer Fund, so they can help more people like her."
Her fundraising journey began when she was six, raising $800 in 2023. The next year, she brought in $1,200, and for her eighth birthday in 2025, she raised an incredible $3,000. In total, she has raised $5,000 to help ensure people in Northwestern Ontario receive the best possible cancer care.
The Northern Cancer Fund directs every dollar raised to cancer services in Northwestern Ontario, providing patients with essential care, new equipment, and innovative treatments. For Saige and her family, knowing the money stays local and helps people like her mom makes every donation even more meaningful.
Over the years, Saige's fundraising efforts have grown, with family, friends, and even strangers contributing to her cause. Her determination has inspired those around her to give, showing that even small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact. Her selflessness has touched many hearts, and her story is spreading hope beyond her own community.
"Thank you to my family and friends for always helping me and for donating. It makes me really happy that we can help people," Saige said.
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation recognizes Saige's incredible efforts, acknowledging that her generosity reflects the strength and resilience of families facing cancer. Her commitment is a powerful reminder that anyone, regardless of age, can make a difference.
For Saige, this fundraiser is about more than just raising money—it's about standing by her mom and helping others in their fight against cancer. She has no plans to stop now. She hopes to continue fundraising in the years ahead, ensuring more families have access to the life-saving care they need.
Her story is one of kindness, determination, and the power of community. Proof that even the youngest among us can inspire real change. Through her efforts, Saige is not only making birthdays brighter for herself but bringing hope to those who need it most.
