Regional Critical Care Response Program Receives Leadership Award

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Regional Critical Care Response (RCCR) program is a recipient of a North West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Leadership Award.
RCCR provides real time access to current, evidence-based critical care services using an inter-professional care team approach via telemedicine. It was nominated for the award based on its approach to partnership and collaboration.
Since inception, RCCR has demonstrated exceptional leadership empowering health care providers to co-design equitable, quality critical care services to all residents living in Northwestern Ontario. RCCR provides resuscitative support, early stabilization of patients and facilitation of efficient transfers reducing overall transport times. In addition, the team supports 11 rural hospitals and nursing stations by allowing specific patients to be maintained within their communities with the assistance of clinical experts using telemedicine.
RCCR is about providing appropriate care in the appropriate place, saving lives and saving money.
“RCCR promotes a culture of patient safety and responsiveness, acute care education, and sharing of best practices,” said Dr. Michael Scott, Chief of Critical Care at the Hospital. “Most importantly, it results in better outcomes for our patients and families through earlier access to specialized treatments, shorter transfer times, and potentially eliminating the need to transfer a patient at all, resulting in exceptional care closer to home. We are grateful that this critical program has been recognized through the North West LHIN Leadership Award.”
The annual LHIN Leadership Awards acknowledge outstanding transformation, partnerships and leadership excellence across Northwestern Ontario’s health care system.
