Lake Superior is a focal point of life in Thunder Bay. Our beautiful marina, exceptional views and swimming spots spark pride in Lake Superior, the biggest fresh water lake in the world. Covering 10% of planet Earth’s fresh water surface, Lake Superior runs east from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and west to Minnesota, and south to Wisconsin and Michigan. It covers an impressive 82,000km2. It is also home to 78 different species of fish, making fishing a popular year-round activity in Thunder Bay.

Without a doubt, access to nature is one of the best perks of living in Thunder Bay. Being on or near the water can bring you peace and relaxation from a regularly busy life. Here are some ways you can enjoy Lake Superior:

Close to home:

  • Tour our harbor with Sail Superior (sailsuperior.com)
  • Bring your family to Wild Goose Beach to splash in the waves
  • Take in the beautiful views from Sleeping Giant Provincial Park while you hike the infamous Sleeping Giant
  • Go fishing for lake trout or salmon and make a fresh and healthy meal
  • Launch your kayak or canoe in the lake for a morning on the water
  • Try water sports

Tour the Lake Superior Circle:

  • Go camping at one of the parks on Lake Superior to experience beautiful hikes, views and sandy beaches. A few parks to try: Pukaskwa National Park, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Neys Provincial Park
  • List and check off places to visit on the Lake Superior Circle (within Canada!)
  • Escape for a weekend getaway and kayak in Rossport

Venturing farther than Thunder Bay’s city limits allows you to see some of Northwestern Ontario’s most beautiful locations. Whether you enjoy backcountry camping or day trips to swim and kayak, Lake Superior has it all. You can enjoy all these things within a 40 minute drive.
