We Need Cardiac Surgery Close to Home

You can never underestimate the power of home. Several years ago, I had to leave town for cardiac surgery. The trip itself took its toll on me, but even more so, on my husband. For he had lost his father earlier that week. So he had to say goodbye to his Dad, and then had to accompany me to Toronto for surgery, all within a very short period of time. We also had a young daughter and not much family in town to care for her, so we relied on friends to be with her while we were gone. It was heartbreaking to leave her.

While I had excellent care in Toronto, there’s no substitute to the care your family and friends can provide, both to you as a patient, but also to your immediate family as they look after you. As a former patient, a staff member at the Hospital, and a NextGen Cabinet member for the Our Hearts at Home Cardiovascular Campaign I’m proud to donate to ensure that families can be together before, during and after surgery, right here at home.
