Heather Armstrong has been a dedicated volunteer with the Hospital Foundation for nearly 24 years, beginning her journey in January 2001. Her commitment and enthusiasm have made her an invaluable part of our team, and her story is one of inspiration and passion for giving back to the community.
Heather's journey with the Foundation began in December 2000 when someone very close to her at the time was diagnosed with cancer. Accompanying them to their appointments at the cancer centre, then located at its former site, gave her a firsthand glimpse into the incredible work of the hospital staff and its volunteers. Inspired by this experience, she decided to join the Hospital Foundation as a volunteer. Her mother, Ruth, whose close friend was also undergoing cancer treatment, shared the same inspiration and joined as a volunteer alongside Heather. “I wanted to feel useful and help support the Foundation through volunteerism, as we were so appreciative of all the good the hospital does for its patients,” Heather recalls.
For Heather, volunteering is not just about giving back; it's about the joy of connection and making a difference. “Events are fun! I have always had a passion for volunteerism, fundraising, and interacting with people,” she says. Supporting the hospital remains a priority for Heather, as she recognizes the importance of having advanced equipment and services available in her community. She adds, “The more equipment and services that can be provided at our hospital through the amazing fundraising events held in the city, the better. I will help in any way I can.”
Heather's volunteerism is truly a family affair. Her mother, Ruth, has been volunteering alongside her since the start, and a few years later, her father, Gary, also joined the team. Together, they have contributed countless hours to supporting the Foundation's mission.
One of Heather's favourite roles has been selling 50/50 tickets at the mall, an experience that allows her to interact with countless people while supporting a great cause. “It was fun to do something different from my day job by getting to talk with so many people,” she says. Heather also cherishes her involvement in the Motorcycle Ride for Dad events, especially since the very first Ride for Dad in 2001 marked her initial volunteering experience with the Foundation. Returning to volunteer for this event last summer brought back wonderful memories and reminded her how much she loves volunteering.
Heather's passion for volunteerism extends beyond her work with the Foundation. At her workplace, she serves as the Charity Ambassador, coordinating charity events and volunteer activities throughout the year. Her efforts not only support numerous organizations, but her company's annual month of giving, combined with corporate matching, increases the reach and effectiveness of their contributions, making a lasting difference in the community.
Heather Armstrong's story represents the power of compassion and community spirit. We are incredibly grateful to have her as part of our volunteer family. Thank you, Heather, for nearly 24 years of support and kindness. Her dedication is a reminder of the difference one person can make when we all come together.
