World-Class Urology Program Aims Higher
Published Wednesday, July 26, 2023
We often talk about bringing world-class healthcare to Thunder Bay with the support of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation donors. But when it comes to urology, “world-class” takes on a higher meaning. That’s because in several cases, we offer prostate and kidney stone treatments that aren’t available elsewhere in Ontario or even most places in the world.
Urologists Dr. Hazem Elmansy and Dr. Walid Shahrour are committed to providing the best possible care for their patients at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). Achieving world-class status is a significant achievement - and, thanks to donor support, they have the technology to provide this remarkable care.
“In 2020, the Urology Program was one of the first in Canada to purchase the versatile Lumenis MOSES laser system. At the time it was the most advanced system used for kidney stone removal and BPH benign prostatic hyperplasia (treatment for enlarged prostates),” Dr. Elmansy explained.
Now, the Urology Program has an incredible opportunity to upgrade to MOSES 2.0 technology for $60,000 with the help of the Health Sciences Foundation. We will be the first in Canada to have this upgrade! The goal is to purchase this upgrade this summer.
This new technology will continue to push the boundaries of efficiency, procedure outcomes, shorter operating times and, most importantly, improved patient experience. The MOSES 2.0 upgrade will help provide a:
· 20% reduction in procedure time, and
· 33% increase in kidney stone ablation speed
We need your help to take the next step forward. Donors are making a major difference in the lives of our patients!
Since 2020, more than 200 patients with enlarged prostates have been treated at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. With this equipment, 100% of patients have been discharged the same day, without a catheter, with less pain and without requiring retreatment. This upgrade will help us reduce procedure time and decrease the likelihood of a ureteral stone migration to the kidney, meaning we'll be able to treat more patients, safer.
“Having the newest technology in Thunder Bay allows us to keep advancing and to set the bar high for the quality of care we provide, and set a standard that other centers aim for,” Dr. Elmansy shared.
You can help Dr. Elmansy and Dr. Shahrour continue to dream big, and take the next step forward. Your gift to the Urology Fund will help us upgrade to MOSES 2.0 technology and continue to provide the best possible care for you, your family, or someone you know.
