Helping Community Includes Helping Healthcare

Ryan Moore, Manager Annual Giving has been apart of THE Pipes & Drums of Thunder Bay for the past 30 years.

Meet Ryan Moore, Manager of Annual Giving at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation

Ryan Moore calls himself a “recovering high school teacher,” a career he left behind to work at the Chamber of Commerce and then the Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) for 10 years. In November 2023, he joined the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation as our new Manager, Annual Giving. But every opportunity he's taken focused on one thing: community.

“I've always gotten involved in things that improve my city,” Ryan said. “I was looking for a new challenge when I joined the Foundation. I thrive in new situations where I can test my skills.”

Moving to healthcare philanthropy gave him the opportunity to make an impact in an area that affects every person in the city – not to mention patients across Northwestern Ontario.

“Everyone we know is, at some point, going to pass through the doors of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre,” he said. “What we do at the Foundation can help somebody have a better experience.”

Part of that is ensuring that we have the healthcare services we need, when we need them. And for Ryan, that's more than a pie-in-the-sky ideal. It's personal.

“My father had to go to Hamilton for his bypass surgeries,” he said. “Having to travel for healthcare in general doesn't make sense.”

Ryan has also seen how things get better, thanks to the Foundation. For example, his father had his latest check-up in one of the two donor-supported Cath Labs. Without those labs, he would have had to travel again. Ryan draws a direct line between donations including annual giving to those services we have today.

“Every dollar that someone donates today makes a difference,” he said. “The Foundation stewards that pool of donations, so that when we get a request for, say, a new Cath Lab, that money is there. Because of that, my father didn't have to go to Toronto or somewhere for a check-up.”

Ryan is active in other areas of the community as well. He is President of THE Pipes & Drums of Thunder Bay, one of the oldest bagpipe bands in Canada, and he's on the board of the Thunder Bay Minor Football Association.

“I love being part of Thunder Bay, and it's great to be able to give back,” Ryan said. “Everything I've done, I've done to help make an impact on my community.”

Becoming a Health Sciences Foundation Monthly Donor is one of the best and easiest ways you can support healthcare in Northwestern Ontario. To learn more about setting up your monthly donation, you can contact Ryan directly at (807) 684-7112 or Ryan.Moore@tbh.net
