Celebrating Excellence with the iCare Impact Awards

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) celebrated the recipients of the 2023 iCare Impact Awards. The iCare impact Awards program is open to all employees, professional staff, and volunteers of TBRHSC and Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI), and aim to highlight the individuals and initiatives that support our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.

The Strategy in Action Award, selected by the President & CEO and Board of Directors, is awarded to those who have contributed to strategic projects/initiatives that make an impact on patient and staff experience at TBRHSC. This year, the award was presented to the Remote Treatment Planning: Radiation Therapy project for creating an innovative remote treatment-planning model to better serve cancer patients in the region.

The Vision Award, selected by the President & CEO and Board of Directors, is awarded to those who consistently contribute to exceptional patient care. This year, Tony Scopacasa, Housekeeping Attendant, was honoured for continuously going the extra mile while displaying a friendly demeanor.

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award honours those in the Hospital community who embody the goal of “we all belong” and embeds cultural diversity in all that they do. This year, the award was presented to Annette Klement, Cultural Safety Educator. Annette has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to cultivating a culturally safe environment.

The Foundation Award honours those who have contributed to initiatives that support the Hospital's mission, values & vision. Dr. Mark Henderson was honoured this year for his undeniable passion & commitment towards cardiovascular care in Northwestern Ontario.

The Volunteer Award honours those who inspire other volunteers. This year, Jill Biggs was honoured for being an integral contributor in the development of the Therapy Dog program for staff at TBRHSC. Jill coordinated the St. John Ambulance therapy dogs and handlers for visits throughout the year.

The Professional Staff Award honours those who demonstrate excellence, promote quality and safety in care and leads teaching of principles. Dr. Hazem Elmansy was the recipient this year for his dedication to both his own urology craft and sharing knowledge.

The Sustainable Future Award honours those who embody the goal of ensuring our healthy, sustainable future. The Patient Flow Dashboard Project Team was selected for their streamlined patient flow for those receiving care at the Hospital.

The Staff Experience Award honours those who contribute to a strategic initiative that embodies “this is where we want to work, grow and thrive”. The Pharmacy department won for their resiliency as they manage understaffing while maintaining quality patient care.

The Patient Experience Award honours those who embody “empathy, compassion and respect in every encounter”. The award was given to Sarah A. Myllyaho, Wound & Ostomy Nurse, for constantly going above and beyond for our patients and their families

The Research, Innovation and Learning Award honours those who contribute to the goal of “prioritizing our research efforts”. The ROSA-Robotic Surgical Assistant team was honoured this year for their contribution to knee implant procedures.
