The fifth annual Kennedy Hirschfeld Memorial Golf Tournament was held this summer at the Thunder Bay Country Club, raising a total of $795. Aarno Peura has organized the tournament for several years and has donated the proceeds to several charitable organizations. Most recently in 2020 and 2021, he has generously donated a total of $1,740 to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation’s Our Hearts at Home Cardiovascular Campaign, helping bring closer-to-home cardiovascular surgery right here to Northwestern Ontario.
“We all enjoy coming together to play in this tournament every year,” said Aaron Peura, the organizer of the event. “The Our Hearts at Home Campaign is so important for the City of Thunder Bay and all of Northwestern Ontario. We are all so happy we can support it and have fun at the same time.”
Kennedy Hirschfeld was a good friend of the tournament organizers and was a well respected member of the community. He passed away at the age of 60 due to complications from a heart condition.
The tournament had over 45 players this year, who were all very eager to come out and show their support. “All of the donors knew where the money was going, they were all excited about donating it to the Foundation,” said Peura. “Everyone had a great time at the tournament, and everyone said that they were looking forward to next year.”
Although COVID-19 has placed some restrictions on their event, the participants were happy that golf is one activity that still feels relatively normal, due to the nature of the sport.
“We were very happy with the result and turnout we had, although it’s not the largest amount of money in the world every dollar makes a difference,” said Peura.
